NEPAL
The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is a landlocked nation in South Asia that is located between India and China. Home to around 30% of the Himalayan Mountain range, and the majority of its highest peaks, Nepal has 8 of the world’s 14 tallest mountains, including Everest at 8,848 metres.
But the country has a lot more to it; from yaks to yetis, pagodas to parasols and snow leopards to the living goddess, Nepal captivates the imagination and leaves a lasting impression. It is the embodiment of diversity, whether that is geographical, cultural, spiritual or ethnical – there are an incredible 142 ethnic groups and 123 languages.
The altitude of Nepal ranges from 59 metres above sea level in Kechana Kawal, to the planet's 8,844 metre peak at Sagarmatha – the Nepali name for Mount Everest. Amazingly this increase happens over just 150 kilometres, during which the climate moves from sub-tropical to Arctic. The diversity of ecosystems, flora and fauna is mind-blowing, as are the conservation efforts to protect it by the locals.
While many visit for the sheer majesty of the mountains, spiritual and religious Himalayan pilgrimages are very popular. Lumbini in the southern plains of Nepal is the birthplace of Lord Buddha and Mount Kailash, at the edge of Nepal, India and China is the abode of the great Hindu God Shiva. Plus you can visit Kumari, the living virgin goddess, in Kathmandu – the city of Golden Pagodas and Parasols.
To add to all of this, Nepal is the land of non-stop festivals, with one almost every day of the year. This joy of celebration encapsulates the spirit of the Nepalese people. They are friendly, welcoming and generous, despite living in a challenging environment and a poor country. Spending time with Nepalese people is reason enough to visit, but the majestic mountains, incredible culture, wonderful wildlife and adventurous activities really top it off!
