The Royal Annapurna Trek is a short and scenic trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It offers a combination of cultural exploration, rural village life, and panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The trek is named after Prince Charles, who explored this trail in the 1980s.
The trek got its name after Prince Charles and his 90-person entourage walked this route in 1980. Since then, it has been popularly known as the “Royal Trek,” symbolizing its royal heritage and serene experience away from the crowd.
The Royal Annapurna Trek usually takes 3 to 5 days to complete, depending on the pace and itinerary. It covers a moderate distance, making it suitable for beginners and families.
The best time to do the Royal Annapurna Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is clear, the skies are blue, and the mountain views are at their best.
The Royal Trek is considered easy to moderate in difficulty. It does not involve high altitude or challenging terrain, making it suitable for beginners, families, and elderly trekkers. Basic fitness is enough to enjoy the journey.
The highest point of the Royal Annapurna Trek is around 1,730 meters (5,675 feet) above sea level, which means there is no risk of altitude sickness.
The trek usually starts near Bijaypur Khola, about a 30-minute drive from Pokhara, and ends at Begnas Lake, a serene freshwater lake east of Pokhara. From there, travelers can return to Pokhara by vehicle.
