Overview
The Khopra Ridge Trek, also known as the Khopra Danda Trek, is a rewarding off-the-beaten-path journey in the Annapurna region. This trek offers breathtaking mountain views, quiet trails, and rich cultural encounters without the crowds found on more popular routes like Ghorepani or Annapurna Base Camp. The highlight of the trek is the stunning Khopra Ridge (3,660 m), which provides panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre. Another major attraction is the holy Khayar Lake (4,660 m), reached through a long and challenging day hike that adds adventure and spiritual significance to the journey.
The trail passes through charming Magar and Gurung villages, terraced fields, dense rhododendron forests, and scenic highlands. It also connects with the popular Ghorepani Poon Hill route, making it a great alternative for trekkers looking for a more serene and authentic experience. Comfortable community lodges and homestays along the way enhance the cultural immersion, while the trail remains safe and well-maintained.
The Khopra Ridge Trek is suitable for trekkers with moderate fitness levels, and it can be completed in 7 to 10 days depending on the itinerary. The best seasons to trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the skies are clear and the views are at their best. Overall, the Khopra Ridge Trek is an excellent choice for nature lovers seeking dramatic scenery, peaceful trails, and a rewarding Himalayan experience.
Itinerary
Arrive in Pokhara, explore the lakeside, prepare for the trek, and enjoy panoramic mountain views.
After breakfast, you will drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, the official starting point of the trek. The trail begins gently as you follow the Modi Khola River through charming Magar villages, terraced fields, and small tea houses. Walking past lush countryside landscapes, you will gradually ascend toward Tikhedhunga, a peaceful settlement located near a flowing waterfall. This first trekking day offers an easy, warm-up walk through rural life in the Annapurna region.
The day begins with a steep climb up the famous Ulleri stone steps, a challenging but rewarding ascent. After Ulleri, the trail enters dense rhododendron and oak forests, offering shade and wildlife sightings along the way. As you gradually climb higher, cool mountain air and beautiful greenery surround you. By afternoon, you reach Ghorepani, a lively village known for its warm teahouses and magnificent views of Annapurna South, Dhampus Peak, and Dhaulagiri.
Today starts early with a rewarding hike to Poon Hill (3,210 m), one of the best sunrise viewpoints in Nepal. As the sun rises, golden light spreads across the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, creating a breathtaking panorama. After enjoying the views, you descend to Ghorepani for breakfast and continue trekking through rhododendron forests and scenic ridges. The path offers continuous mountain views until you finally reach Tadapani, a small village perched on a ridge with stunning peaks just in front of you.
Leaving the main trekking route, you enter the quiet and peaceful trail toward Dobato. This section is known for its untouched beauty, moss-covered forests, and chances to spot wildlife such as Himalayan langurs and colorful birds. The atmosphere becomes serene and remote as you climb higher. Dobato itself is a small, peaceful village, and nearby Muldai Viewpoint offers spectacular sunrise and sunset panoramas that rival Poon Hill.
This is one of the most scenic days of the trek as the trail opens up to wide mountain views along the ridgeline. Walking through open meadows and highland paths, you can enjoy dramatic scenes of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Hiunchuli throughout the day. Reaching Khopra Ridge is a highlight—the lodge sits on a stunning ridge with 360-degree mountain views, making it one of the best vantage points in the entire Annapurna region.
This is a long, challenging, but extremely rewarding day. The trail to Khayar Lake climbs through alpine pastures, rocky terrain, and sacred sites where locals worship during the Janai Purnima festival. Khayar Lake is a holy pilgrimage spot for Hindus and is surrounded by dramatic mountain walls. After spending time at the lake, you return to Khopra Ridge for the night, tired but fulfilled with one of the trek’s greatest achievements.
After the high-altitude adventure, you begin descending through forested trails and yak pastures. The landscape gradually transforms from cold alpine terrain to warm mid-hill forests. Chistibung is a small settlement with a peaceful atmosphere, offering a quiet evening surrounded by nature.
Today’s walk takes you through traditional Magar villages, terraced farmlands, and thick forests. The peaceful village of Swanta is known for its friendly locals and organic cheese produced at the community-run cheese factory. This cultural experience adds warmth and authenticity to the trek.
Leaving Swanta, you cross small rivers and gradually climb through rhododendron forests to reach Ghorepani once again. This part of the trail reconnects you with the popular trekking route, giving another chance to enjoy mountain views and the lively atmosphere of Ghorepani.
On the final trekking day, you descend through forested trails, traditional villages, and beautiful farmland until reaching Nayapul. From here, a scenic drive takes you back to Pokhara, where you can enjoy a well-deserved meal and relax near the lakeside after completing the trek.
