Overview

Upper Mustang Trek

The Jomsom–Kagbeni–Lo Manthang Trek offers an incredible journey through the rain-shadow landscapes of Upper Mustang, where centuries-old Tibetan culture, dramatic desert canyons, and ancient walled settlements create one of Nepal’s most remarkable trekking experiences. Starting from the windy town of Jomsom, the trail follows the Kali Gandaki River north toward Kagbeni, the historic gateway to Upper Mustang. As trekkers move deeper into the restricted region, the terrain transforms into striking ochre cliffs, eroded rock formations, high-altitude plateaus, and hidden cave monasteries that preserve Mustang’s spiritual heritage.

The trek’s ultimate highlight is reaching Lo Manthang—the medieval walled capital of the former Mustang Kingdom—famous for its royal palace, white-washed houses, prayer flags, and the traditional lifestyle that has remained unchanged for centuries. This culturally immersive trek reveals sacred Buddhist monasteries, chortens, and ancient sky caves while offering panoramic views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna ranges, and the arid Tibetan plateau. With its unique blend of culture, desert landscapes, and high-altitude trekking wilderness, the Jomsom–Kagbeni–Lo Manthang Trek stands as a perfect adventure for those seeking remote Himalayan beauty and an authentic cultural experience in Nepal’s Mustang region.
