Overview

Langtang Gosaikunda Trek

The Langtang Gosainkunda Trek is ideal for hikers who wish to experience both nature and culture close to the thriving Kathmandu city. The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek appears to have it all, including the authentic Tamang villages of the Langtang valley, the pristine lake of Gosaikunda, and the stunning panorama of the snow-capped peaks of the Langtang Himal Range. This journey, one of the simplest in Nepal, is ideal for both novice and expert trekkers.

Gosaikunda is a holy lake revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, and it offers a unique synthesis of both cultural wealth and scenic beauty. Numerous pilgrims come here to take a dip in the sacred water of Gosaikunda during the festival known as Janai Purnima, which takes place in the month of August. They firmly think that bathing in the lake helps them atone for their transgressions.

On this trek, as you ascend and descend the several hills, you will travel through breathtaking rhododendron and alpine forests with a wide variety of flora and wildlife. There are several rivers and their tributaries, as well as brilliant waterfalls, desolate slopes, evergreen woods, and various landscapes

We only have a handful of itineraries where sleeping bags are required and these are generally trips that involve camping. When we use homestays, blankets are provided but some travellers feel more comfortable with their own sleeping bag or sleep sheet.

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Royal Himalaya are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

The trek usually takes 10 to 14 days, depending on the route and pace. The standard itinerary includes trekking through Syabrubesi, Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, Kyanjin Gompa, and Gosaikunda Lake, before returning via Sundarijal or Dhunchhe.

This trek is considered moderate to challenging. You’ll walk 5 to 7 hours daily through steep ascents and descents. The altitude and long walking hours can be demanding, but with proper preparation, it’s achievable for most trekkers.

No, you don’t need prior trekking experience. However, being physically fit and mentally prepared is essential. Regular walking, hiking, or cardio exercises before the trek help improve endurance and comfort on the trail.

The highest point is Laurebina Pass (4,610 meters / 15,120 feet), which offers panoramic views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges. Gosaikunda Lake itself is at 4,380 meters (14,370 feet).

The trek begins at Syabrubesi (1,550 meters), which is about a 6–7 hour drive (122 km) from Kathmandu. Private jeeps and public buses are available daily.

Accommodation is in local teahouses or lodges, providing basic but comfortable facilities. Rooms are usually twin sharing with shared bathrooms. Hot showers and Wi-Fi are available at some teahouses for a small extra fee.

Teahouses serve a mix of local Nepali and international dishes, including Dal Bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, soups, omelets, pancakes, and fried rice. It’s best to eat freshly cooked, vegetarian meals for better digestion at altitude.
